Magazine Masthead Final Desgin

This is my final design for my masthead from my research.
I have gained research from mot only my questionnare feedback but also from analysing existing music magazines in terms of:

• The style of the masthead
• The colour of the Masthead
• How it connects/ matches the magazine
• How it links with the magazines music genre choice (i.e. KARRANG - Rock Music/ genre)

I have been able to use this research to gain inspiration and some form of ideas into creating my masthead and to fit it to the generic conventions of a music magazine and its genre choice.

Magazine Masthead Questionnare Analysis

Fom the feedback and questionnares that I have gathered from my audience in terms of what my magazine masthed would be the most popular font was:

This was the most favourited font of the ideas, this is what people had to say in why they chose this:

• It's easily readable and it suits the genre
• Because it is bold and it stands out
• The font looks rocky and its easy to read
• It's unique
• It looks really cool

With the choice of the official name, the one that the audience loved the most was:

Finally with the Choice of colour the three that were the most popular were:

1. White
2. Red
3. Black

This is what people had to say on why they chose these colours:

• These colours seem to work well
• They match each other the best and are more conventional of a music magazine
• Because they match and stand out
• They are a good combination
• They are gender neutral and they suit rock
• They stand out and are suitable for both genders of audiences

With these results I will be able to make my masthead logo based on the feedback of my audiences from my questionnares.

Magazine Masthead analysis

These masthead are collected from different magazines that are in publish today and to create my own masthead I must first analyse different Mastheads of different magazines, so that I can gain some ideas and feedback into my own.
RWD- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is pop. I think this because the font is styled fun and how it uses the R as rewind with the rexind art on the left.
KERRANG- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is rock. I think this because how it uses the font as from where I see it looks like its been shattered (and also I think that rock can be loud to shatter things) and that is what this font is. Also with the exclamation mark coud mean that its making a point/ or statement, or even to show expression (but it could also refer to it being loud). With the colour choice of black and white it is a typical/ stereotypical colour/s for rock
Q- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is all round. I think this because it dosn't show in my opinion the genre of music and it is just a simple Q (but Q could mean many things). It could mean the Q for music or the biggect star that are now and/ or that are rising.
The Source- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is Pop. I think this because of the font it looks like a pop style but I also think that it could also represent Rap because it also looks like a font for rap music and how "THE" is on the left of "SOURCE" but also it is on its side.
Hip Hop- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is Rap. I think this because the font is swayed and its font looks like it is in a sort of graffiti and through Rap conveyed in the media (i.e. Films and Television), this would be a typical font for Rap and with the use of the colours grey and black and how Hip is black and Hop is grey shows that both are different but fit together.
VIBE- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is R&B. I  think this becuase the font is bold and in capital letters and it is simple which is what I would find on R&B and with the colour red would/ makes it bold and it is an R&B colour.
MixMag- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is Electronic. I think this because the font is bold and it has a seperate design for the "I" as instead of a dot it has a cricle in a circle to replace it this is a reason why I think it is Electronic and also with the uses of the colour grep for the title it is (to me) a typical colour for Electronic because of the metal pianos and all the metal instruments and equipment that are used to make Electronic music.
XXL- In my opinion I think that the genre of music for this magazine is Rock/ Punk. I think this because the font is bold and it has (in my view) that look of rock and with the use of the colours of white and red which is a colour of rock for ewxample it has been a combination colou in rock and punk (especially in the 80's or 90's.
In general different fonts have a wide variety or style, colours and meaning (i.e. the type of magazine and what is its main type of music genre). With this I will be able to gain information and inspiration in creating my own masthead for my magazine, from this I have been able to identify the different aspects and conventions when looking at mastheads from other different music magazines.

Costume: My artist is going to wear black clothes Black shirt (which has neon New York on it), a black cardigan, and a silver coin necklace; also I will wear rings on some fingers and maybe wear American flag glasses. The reason that I have chosen my artist to wear black is because my genre is rock and black is a typical colour of the genre.

Props: I am not going to have any props for the front cover of the magazine but I plan to use it for the contents page, this is because I want the audience to concentrate on my artist 

Setting: I plan to cut out my artist and will plan to use a white background to take the photo at, so that fireworks is able and can detect the white background.

Facial expression, pose, body language: My artist will be looking directly at the camera and I will be taking two different photos with different expressions. Both will have a shocked expression on the face so that he is happy, but the first one will have the arms pointing out towards the camera as a sort of welcome and the second one will have both hands performing the rock gesture

Hair and make-up: I will have my artist wear black eye shadow because some rock artist wear eye shadow and make-up and I want my artist to be a conventional and stereotypical rock artist.

 

Shot types: I will have my artist taken in a medium shot and maybe I will try to take it in a medium long shot or medium close-up so that I get the upper half of his body (which is important and is conventional of a magazine to have a photo shot done in a medium shot).

 

Lighting: I will have the light shine on my artist and maybe have it to the side of him, so that when I edit it on Photoshop it will come out effectively and lovely. So that I can also have one side light and one side dark.

Magazine Plan and Feedback Analysis (Decisions)

This is going to be my layout/ design of my music magazine cover and how its going to be presented. I will be creating my magazine based on the feedback of my questionnares (completed by my target audience) I will be using the following feedback for my design:

• The genre of music that I will be using is Rock.
• The colours I will use are: Black, Silver and White and maybe also Black, Red and Purple.
• The feature I will use will be: Interviews, Top music listings, competitions and free gifts.
• The price for my magazine will be £3.00.
• I will inculde lots of artists relating to rock (such as AC/DC).
• Based on where poeple get their music from (which were Itunes and HMV) I will use in my competions (such as giving vouchers or gift cards).
• I will be using different fonts/ Font types so that each feature is different and it fits with the rock genre in terms of style (i.e. sharp and spicky fonts).
• I will make my magazine for both male and female even though female was the highest on my answers I will have my magazine apeals to both sexes. The reason I have done this is because Boys like rock more than girls and it would be difficult to make a rock magazine for girls as it would not fit with the rock genre (in terms of fonts, it would not appeal to girls, but more to boys).

I also have my photoshoot for the main image on the magazine. How I will keep it conventional and to stay in the rock genre is that:

• The Shot type that I will be using will be a medium shot/ medium long shot.
• I will be wearing clothes that are black and dark (i.e. I will wear a Brown New York Shirt with a black cardigan with a coin necklace and also rings/ a ring.
• I will not be using props as I just want to focus on top half of my artist.
• I will use my inspiration based on KERRANG magazine as it is simillar to the genre that I am doing.
